Went up last weekend to try to hunt down some crappies. It turns out the only crappies I could find in my whole lake were right off the end of my dock. I saw two sandy beds each with one fish on it (probably a male coming in early yo make his bed) and caught both fish. One was 10.5"s the other was almost 11. I kept casting around but couldn't find anything else but gills. Got 2 nice gills around 8 inches by casting small crank baits. One of me and Chris' new phenomenons. We read an article in the NAFC Magazine about casting little crank baits for these sunfish and I have found it works surprisingly well so far. You can look in my article Spring Gills! to learn more about this. After the gills slowed down I decided to throw around a spinner bait for the bass. First cast I had a small one nail it up in the shallows. After about 20 casts off the dock (using a fan cast approach) I had 5 bass. Throughout the weekend doing this same thing I got over 20 bass just off the dock and also one small northern.
This really illustrates that the bass are on the move and starting to come in shallow to scout out nesting areas. Out in the boat ?I did about the same on the bass but I also got a few nice ones. The biggest of the weekend was another 20"er. Found him right in the middle of a shallow weedy bay. Sorry about the odd facial expression I had to take the pic by myself
I also had to throw in a picture of this behemoth bass!
The hot bait this weekend is the 3/8 ounce Terminator spinner bait pictured in with the northern until a big 30+ incher broke me off right next to the dock... I was a little bummed after that one
